Original editorial diagram of the article’s subject; illustrations are conceptual rather than measured results. Key takeaways
Most email programs fail an audit in two places: the list (dormant share, consent records, suppression reconciliation) and authentication (SPF, DKIM, DMARC alignment on every stream). The template puts those sections first because they explain most "sudden" deliverability problems.
Every check has a pass threshold taken from a published rule: Google's spam-rate limits (0.10% target, 0.30% limit), Yahoo's two-day unsubscribe processing, Microsoft's authentication requirement for 5,000+/day senders, Gmail's 5,000-message bulk-sender threshold, and the operating thresholds used in the reactivation playbook (hard bounces 2%, complaints 0.1% pause).
Scoring is deliberately simple: each check is pass, warning or fail; a program with any fail in sections 1–3 is not ready for a volume increase or a reactivation, whatever the content score says.
Agencies can run the template as a productized audit (the market prices these at roughly $500–5,000); in-house teams can run it quarterly. The same template is the intake for EngageMKTG's Data & Deliverability Audit .
The audit produces a next-step plan, not a grade. Section 7 maps each failed check to the action and the guide that fixes it.
On this page How to use the template Section 1: List health (10 checks) Section 2: Consent and compliance (8 checks) Section 3: Authentication and sender requirements (9 checks) Section 4: Sending practice (7 checks) Section 5: Automation and measurement (7 checks) Section 6: Content and template hygiene (7 checks) Section 7: From fails to a plan Scoring FAQ Sources How to use the template
Download the CSV. Each row is one check with "How to test," "Pass threshold" and empty "Result" and "Note" columns.
Work through the six sections in order; sections 1–3 gate the rest.
Mark each check Pass, Warning or Fail. Record the number you saw, not just the verdict.
Count fails per section. Any fail in sections 1–3 is a blocker; warnings in sections 4–6 are improvement items.
Use Section 7 to turn fails into a dated plan.

Count fails and warnings per section. Interpretation, not a grade:
Any fail in sections 1–3: the program is not ready to increase volume, change ESP, or reactivate a dormant segment. Fix these first; they are the causes behind most "going to spam all of a sudden" incidents.
Fails only in sections 4–6: the foundation is sound; the plan is operational.
Warnings only: schedule a re-audit in 90 days.
For agencies: the template as delivered here is the scope of a productized audit; the market prices such audits at roughly $500–5,000 depending on the number of ESPs and the sending history. The white-label guide covers how to package it.

FAQ
Is the template really free?
Yes, CSV and PDF, no email address required. It is the same checklist used as the intake for our paid audit.
How long does the audit take?
Three to four hours for a single-ESP program with Postmaster, SNDS and Yahoo CFL access; longer when several sending systems or brands are involved.
What access do I need?
Read access to the ESP's reports and audience, DNS lookups for the sending domains, Postmaster Tools, SNDS and Yahoo's Complaint Feedback Loop, and a Gmail test mailbox for headers.
What counts as a pass on spam rate?
Every day in the last 30 below 0.10% in Postmaster Tools. Any day at or above 0.30% is a fail and starts the six-week recovery plan.
Can an agency use this for clients?
Yes; it is designed for that. Run it as the entry offer, present Section 7 as the plan, and deliver the fixes or hand them to a backend partner.
What is the difference between this template and the Data & Deliverability Audit ?
The template is self-serve. The audit runs the same checks with our scanning and cohort tooling on your data and returns a prioritized remediation plan with the dormant-revenue estimate.
Want the checks run on your data rather than by hand? The Data & Deliverability Audit covers all six sections with the scan and the cohort tooling, and returns the plan. Request the audit →

Artem Kukharenko works at the intersection of email marketing, automation and AI. He builds and operates the systems that connect audience growth, deliverability and customer engagement, bringing strategy, data and implementation together. His writing for EngageMKTG turns technical email challenges into practical decisions, with a focus on clear evidence, responsible list management and measurable outcomes.
In this knowledge series, Artem examines how sender requirements, contact states, billing models and audience history affect the next operational decision. The guides connect eligibility checks and gradual sending with explicit stop conditions, then explain how to measure results against a fixed starting cohort. They distinguish planning assumptions from measured performance and treat clicks, replies and purchases as different evidence from recorded opens.
His approach keeps human judgment in the loop: teams choose the goals, review the risks and decide when a program should pause or change direction. The accompanying examples, checklists and calculator are designed to make that review easier. Platform details are dated and linked to their sources so readers can check the basis for a recommendation and adapt it to their own systems.
